Before anyone builds a level, writes a rulebook chapter or pitches a story to a publisher, someone has to answer a simple question: what does this place look like? Concept art is how that answer gets made. We create thumbnail explorations, color studies and finished environment keyframes that give your world a clear visual identity — something your team can build from and your audience can fall into.

Who this service is for

  • Indie game developers who need to set an art direction, test the mood of levels or create key art for a store page.
  • Tabletop RPG and board game designers who want location art for rulebooks, campaign settings and crowdfunding campaigns.
  • Writers and creators pitching a world to publishers, studios, investors or backers.
  • Game masters who want a few beautiful, custom location paintings to show players at the table.

What you get

Concept work moves from loose to polished. We start with thumbnails — small, quick grayscale sketches that test camera angle, scale and composition. Working in values first lets us check that a scene reads clearly before color makes it complicated. You choose the strongest direction, often combining ideas from more than one thumbnail.

Next comes a color and lighting study, which fixes the time of day, weather, atmosphere and palette. Finally, we paint the keyframe: a finished illustration with refined architecture, terrain, foliage and storytelling details that hint at who lives there and what happened before.

Simple layered planes and a limited palette can establish a location’s mood long before details are added.

Files are delivered as layered PSDs, with foreground, midground and background separated where possible — useful for parallax effects in trailers and menus — along with flattened high-resolution images and any crops you need.

Styles and options

We work in a painterly digital style that can lean toward graphic, flat-shaded scenes or richer, atmospheric rendering. Fantasy towns, ruins, forests, interiors, cozy villages, alien landscapes and moody cityscapes are all within scope. Common options include:

  • Thumbnail packs for early exploration, when you are not yet sure what a place should be.
  • Keyframes for capsule art, title screens, chapter openers and pitch decks.
  • Color scripts that plan how mood and palette change across a game or story.
  • Detail sheets for architecture, props or recurring landmarks.
  • Character integration — pair this service with original character design so your cast and world share one visual language.
Scope: Concept art defines the look of your world. Production assets such as tilesets, sprites, textures and 3D models are not included, but our layered files are prepared to be a helpful reference for the artists who create them.

Usage rights: personal vs commercial

A personal licence suits game masters and hobbyists using art in a home campaign, on a personal blog or as a wallpaper. Most concept work, however, is commissioned for a product, so we usually quote a commercial licence tied to the named project. It covers use in the game or book itself, store pages, trailers, crowdfunding campaigns, rulebooks and marketing. Merchandise such as art prints or artbooks for sale, or use across several separate projects, can be added. For studios that need exclusive rights, we can quote a full copyright transfer.

This is a general overview, not legal advice. Your licence terms are confirmed in writing before work starts.

What we need from you

  • A short description of the world: genre, era, culture, technology and tone.
  • The specific locations you need and what happens there in the story or gameplay.
  • Technical needs: aspect ratio, resolution, camera perspective (side-scrolling, isometric, first-person) and any UI that will overlay the image.
  • Visual references and mood boards, including anything you want to avoid.
  • Where the art will be used, and key deadlines such as a campaign launch or publisher meeting.

Timeline

Thumbnail packs are typically ready in 7–10 working days. A single keyframe takes about three to four weeks, and a world pitch pack around five weeks, with feedback rounds built in at the thumbnail and color stages. For a crowdfunding launch, book at least two months ahead so there is time to prepare campaign crops. Questions about deposits and scheduling are answered on the commissions FAQ, and you can share your world with us through the request form.

Frequently asked questions

Do you create game-ready assets such as tiles, sprites or 3D models?

No. Our concept art defines the look and mood of your world; production assets such as tilesets, sprites and 3D models are created by your team or specialist artists from these references.

What is the difference between a thumbnail and a keyframe?

Thumbnails are small, fast sketches for exploring ideas. A keyframe is a finished, rendered illustration of an important moment or location that sets the visual target for the whole project.

Can I use the art on a Kickstarter or store page?

Yes. The commercial licence covers crowdfunding campaigns, store pages, trailers, rulebooks and marketing for the named project.

Can you match an existing art style?

Usually, yes. Send examples of your current art direction and we will match line, color and level of rendering as closely as possible.
